Scarf and Crying Kings

As it's been so cold this winter, I decided Alice needed a scarf to go along with her hat and gloves. So I went into the local wool shop and explained what I wanted to do and they chose colours fairly close to her hat. With advice from Marion (my mother-in-law) I knit one. It was far too short!!!!! So that now belongs to Alice's stuffed animals. Did another one and this time it was just the right length. Phew. It is quite satisfying when you hear people say to Alice, "I love your scarf, such beautiful colours", like this morning at Piccolo (actually two mothers said it today!!!, yes, yes, blowing my own trumpet). So I decided it needed tassels. I knit it about 6 weeks ago and only today put the tassels on. I think it finishes it off nicely.

This video is Alice's impression of the crying King of Miseryland in the book Little Miss Sunshine. The first few times it was read to her she just cried, because she is quite sensitive and found it upsetting all the people crying. Then we made the crying fun and now she laughs the whole way through it. She wouldn't do the crying until I told her she could see herself on the camera afterwards. That's why at the end of the clip she stops really quickly and says Alice, Alice, because she wants to look at herself on the video. How vain!!!! Some of the faces she pulls are hilarious, but trying to catch them on video are becoming more difficult.

Once again, a little cutie! And its not vanity, her wanting to see herself, she just wants to make sure she portrays herself well on camera - vital for the next female prime minister!

What a face!! haha but she is cute.

I love the scarf Pauline - you are really good at that. (That is about all I can knit - a scarf...about 5 years ago when I was home this new wool was out and everyone was knitting scarves with it, so I bought a bunch of wool and knit 3 and havent done any knitting since! haha)

But I do love the colours in it. It´s fun making something yourself....you should always keep that scarf so she will have it when she gets big - the first scarf her mummy knit her.

Aw thanks girls.

Lisa, it is becoming so difficult to catch her on camera because she just wants to see the outcome every time now, even before you've taken anything. Will have to try and get her horrible face on camera.

Laura, I did try and knit her a wee cardigan whilst pregnant. I did it all bar the left side panel. When I tried to sew it all up together, it wouldn't fit. I took it all out and retried various bits of it about 6 times and it just wouldn't fit. I asked the ladies in the wool shop and they said it was probably the pattern that was at fault. So that's sitting in my bag unfinished :-{

Good idea Laura will put it in her wee box of things I keep for her.

Love the scarf - it's great, very much my colours too - so if you want to do a longer one, I know a good home for it:-)
I can't knit a single thing!

Welcome to the world of Alice's independence! Isn't it amazing how quickly their own personalities begin to shine through.

What a lovely scarf, aren't you clever. As always we all love watching the video of Alice. And by birthday song was just lovely. love to you all Cate xx

Hi Catherine, really glad you enjoyed your birthday song. Next year she might be able to sing the whole thing by her self!! Hope the gap where the tooth used to be doesn't hurt too much!!

Rhoda, sorry, don't think I'll be knitting you a scarf. You see the amount of stitches created the length of the scarf. I couldn't fit that many stitches onto my needle. It's amazing watching her in the different wee groups we go to and how different they all are.

Pauline, just thinking back to what we were saying about clothes drying. We have hygrometers in most rooms. The safe recommended percentage is between 40-55%. Once the clothes go on the airer that particular room will rise to anything between 75-85%! Crazy! We have a dehumidifier & we put it on in the room when theres clothes drying. You should see how much water it pulls out of the air, in a 4-5 hour period it can be about a litre!

Lisa, eh????

Exactly Pauline . . . eh indeed!

Humidity ladies!!!!!!! A hygrometer measures humidity in the air! Made a lot worse in winter by cold air & warm air meeting in the home, very bad for your health if the levels are too low or high. Told you Ronnie was a gadget freak! We got a surveyor to come out to test the house and he recommended the dehumidifier, he said you'd be amazed how many homes have too high a humidity & the owners dont know. He said virtually every house he goes into!

Stuart and Pauline said...

And what exactly is that supposed to do for your health? Are you sure this man just wasn't getting some kind of commission from the de-humidifier companies?

lisa said...

No, he definitely doesn't get commission. He was from a company which have nothing to do with humidity, but he saw our meters and knew what they were for. We already knew the readings werent good as Ronnies done loads of research. Too much humidity causes the growth and multiplication of mould (which doesnt have to be visible on walls or whatever, its in the air) which you then breath in. You can then get a big increase of dust mites, allergic reactions and long term lung and chest problems. Theres loads about it on the internet. Since we got the dehumidifier (couple of months) I havent had to use my inhalers, Connor had a night time cough which is now gone and Ronnie hasnt had any nosebleeds (he would have maybe 1-2 a week). When you see how much water appears in the tank you'd be amazed, and the air even feels different. We didnt have any damp or anything, its not like we had black walls or water running down the windows, just a normal house, but we just happened to get a few meters out of curiosity and are so glad we did. Its a much nicer, fresher and healthier atmosphere for the kids to be breathing in.

Ps the dehumidifier was nothing to do with him, we bought it in Currys

I think we need one of those Lisa - we always have condensation....and recently a little black mould around the windows, which I am forever washing and cleaning away....it´s not very much but it annoys me soooo much!! How much does one of those things cost anyway - might just invest in one...and we also air out so much over all the house.

Stuart and Pauline said...

I can see why you would want them if you having breathing difficulties in your family. Would probably think about it if any of us ever developed breathing type health problems.

lisa said...

Laura, once that starts, it will keep getting worse! We boughts ours in Currys and they ranged from £30 up to a few hundred. The price depends on the size of house. There are small ones for caravans, things like that and they go up to large building use. They can have slightly different features, for example the amount of water per hour they can collect and some have HEPA filters and some heat up the air they are circulating so its like a heater as well. We didnt get anything fancy, just one with a large water tank and a quiet motor as it runs upstairs on the landing. Ours cost about £80 but its well worth it. Today it was on for about 4-5 hours and there was 2 liters in the tank!

Pauline, some people dont have health probs for quite a while. But its worth buying a couple of hygrometers even if you have no problems, at least you know the humidity in the house is at the right level. They are cheap, £1.99 in the DIY store. Our problem is too much humidity but too little humidity is an even worse problem.

Sorry that was meant to be 2 pints not 2 litres!!!! If it was 2 litres Id be living in a swimming pool!!

Stuart and Pauline said...

Lisa, I didn't notice the difference between 2 pints and 2 litres anyway. You could've been right the first time, for all I knew!!!

Rhoda said...
