This was Alice on her first birthday.
What a difference a year makes.Stuart's parents came up for the weekend and on Saturday morning we had a few friends round for about an hour. Alice really enjoyed tucking into her Daddy-baked carrot cake (which was really yummy, but under very close supervision by me).
So she opened her present from her friends.
Then on Monday we opened the rest of her presents. It took ages. We gave her the trike first, bad move, we should've let her open everything else first, as she just wanted to ride around on that. Eventually we got her to open them sitting on her trike. There's a parent pole that attaches to the back too.
The table is from Nanna and Grandpa and the chair from us. She thinks they're brilliant, just wants to sit at that as well. She can now do sticky pictures in the house rather than at her wee groups and hopefully not make as much mess. It's also a good place to have snacks now too.
We got her these cotton reels. She really enjoyed playing with that for ages making necklaces.
Stuart went to a local bakers (fantastic one round the corner from us) to get a cake, just a madeira cake, but so yummy. She really enjoyed tucking into that.
Nanny and Papa bought her this scribbler, which she really enjoyed drawing on too.
She was very excited to receive this new tea set from Nanna and Grandpa. She spent ages later on making us all cups of tea.
She also got a few books. One of her favourites from aunty Catherine, Simon, Lilly and Jasmine, which is "we're going on a bear hunt". She nearly knows it off by heart. We kept getting it out of the library and so thought she could have her own copy.
The video is Alice over the weekend. We gave her one of the boxes to play with before her birthday. She used it as a cot for Fraser bear. So she's putting Fraser to sleep and telling him she'll see him in the morning. Then when she takes him out she asks him if he wants calgel, which is her teething gel. At dinner time we asked her if she'd had a good birthday, she nodded and said yes. We asked her what she would like next year for her birthday and she said "cake" a small pause and then "candles". Easily pleased. Then she started singing Happy Birthday to Alice. We had a quiet, but good birthday weekend for Alice, thank you to all who helped make it special for her.

Oh Pauline those video clips are priceless - she is so adorable!! Her facial expression when she got the book was soooo cute....loved her putting the bear to sleep too. So good to have those. Congratulations with her 2nd birthday. Isnt it just amazing where 2 years have gone!!

Thanks for inviting us to share Alice's birthday - I can testify that the carrot cake was exceptionally yummy! Looks like Alice really enjoyed all her presents - though all you'll need to do next year is a cake :o)

Laura, she just became so expressive over the weekend and her wee voice is not monotoned any more, but full of expression.
Mr & Mrs DHG, thank you for coming and sharing the yummy carrot cake. The boys were so well behaved and they were all so adorable sitting on the floor eating their cake. A real credit to you both. Alice keeps making cups of tea with the jam jar!!
Lisa, thank you too. The funny thing is that as you know the current advice is to put feet to the bottom of the cot. In the next video we took she kept putting Fraser bear in the box and then moving him to the bottom so his feet touched the bottom!!! We've moved her to the top of the cot now and have done so for a few months. Funny how much they remember.
Rhoda, Stuart is the one who puts Alice to bed at night, so it's him she's mimicking. However, there are a few wee things she's starting to say which you can hear in yourself too. Quite distressing when they start mimicking facial expressions etc too!!!
Isnt it funny how the do pick up all our funny ways and the way we do things? I take it Alice sleeps with blankets and not a grobag? Tom has always slept in a grobag (once he was the right age) and we're thinking of getting the grobag bedding set soon. Dont know if youve seen it, you can get it from 'bump to 3'. The quilt cover zips onto the sheet so they cant fall out or throw the quilt off and the pillow zips to the sheet so it cant go over their heads. Toms getting to the stage where I think he would like a pillow, so thats a good idea. But I think he would miss his grobag as he moves about the cot a lot & obviously it moves with him, no restrictions or blankets over the head. The quilt sets not recommended for under 2 and a half so we've a few months to think about it.
Yeah, Alice has always had blankets. We used to swaddle her, because the thinking is that as tiny babies they move their arms around and therefore wake themselves up. We didn't like the growbags, we felt we could monitor her temperature more effectively with sheets and blankets. As they're at the bottom of cot anyway, there's no real risk of the blankets going over her head. Also she never stayed at the bottom of the cot, she always ended up at the top out of the blankets.
Where did you read that you don't use quilts until 2 and a half? I've read that you can use duvet sets from 1 upwards.
Its in the blurb for the grobag quilt set in the catalogue not to use it until they are 2 and a half. We tried him with a quilt instead of the grobag about 6 months ago but it was the same as Alice, he ended up at the top of the cot with no cover, but then woke constantly through the night because he was cold. So at about 4am I put him back in the grobag and he slept the rest of the night. I suppose its what theyre used to from babies, and what works for one wont work for another. Connor was always 'feet to foot', there was no such thing as grobags then!
